5-month-old girl died after her intoxicated mother waited hours before calling for help after she smothered the baby to death while sleeping next to her in bed; mother sentenced

Texas – In a heartbreaking case in Texas, a young mother’s reckless actions have led to a 40-year-prison sentence following the death of her 5-month-old daughter. The 27-year-old mother, identified as D. Dechert, pleaded guilty last month to one count of injury to a child – recklessly causing death/serious bodily injury.

Dechert faced serious charges following a tragic incident earlier in August. According to court documents, she became intoxicated by an illegal substance while co-sleeping with her infant daughter. During the night, she rolled over onto the baby, unintentionally smothering her.

What made the situation more severe was Dechert’s reaction upon discovering what had happened. Authorities reported that after waking up, she failed to provide any medical treatment or emergency aid for over eight hours while her child lay unresponsive. This prolonged inaction contributed significantly to the charges against her.

Details about how authorities were alerted to the incident have not been disclosed. Given the lack of immediate medical attention provided by Dechert, it’s unclear who eventually contacted law enforcement or emergency services. The lack of timely intervention was a critical factor in the charges of injury to a child and reckless causation of death.

Dechert’s sentence was influenced by her prior criminal history. In 2014, she was convicted of evading arrest in a motor vehicle—a charge that escalated to a felony because it involved endangering a child. This prior conviction demonstrated a pattern of placing children in dangerous situations. At the sentencing, the judge took into account both the current offense and her past behavior. Dechert was sentenced to 40 years in state prison, reflecting the gravity of her actions and the loss of her daughter’s life. She is required to serve a significant portion of her sentence before being eligible for parole.

In addition to her recent conviction, Dechert faces another criminal charge. She is accused of unlawful possession of a firearm, with a status hearing scheduled for November 14. This additional legal trouble underscores a continuing pattern of unlawful behavior.

This heartbreaking case highlights the severe consequences of neglect and the importance of responsible parenting. Authorities have not released further details about the incident, but the swift legal action reflects the seriousness with which such cases are treated in Texas.
