DAYTON – Kettering Police Chief Chip Protsman held a briefing Monday after a fatal shooting on BP gas station Saturday, March 27.
Officers were already at the BP on South Smithville Road and Wilmington Pike performing a business check when they heard gunshots around 10:35 a.m. The officers left the gas station to see 21-year-old Ja’Leel Brooks, of Trotwood, between two vehicle by the gas pumps. Police ordered him to show his hands and one officer saw him drop a handgun to the ground.
When police were able to secure the scene they found two people who had been shot. The first victim to be discovered was 22-year-old Demarque Young, of Dayton, who was shot in the leg while outside the vehicle. Young was taken to Kettering Hospital for treatment and was released later that day.
After investigating police said that Gray was driving with an unnamed female in the passenger seat and with both Young and Brooks in the back. They believe an argument took place and between Gray and Brooks, so they pulled into the gas station. Brooks then exited the back left passenger seat and fired multiple times into the drivers side window, fatally shooting Gray and injuring Young.
Brooks is currently being held at Montgomery County Jail.
